Anglers casting lines from boats during the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo on Dauphin Island

Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo on Dauphin Island

Every July, Dauphin Island transforms into the world’s biggest saltwater fishing stage. The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo spans three thrilling days of angling, live weigh-ins, concerts and family fun. Whether you’re a seasoned captain or a curious spectator, the rodeo’s dockside atmosphere and waterfront festivities make it a must-see summer tradition. It turns our little island into the must see/do activity of the year.

A Glimpse into History

Founded in 1929 by a group of Mobile businessmen and the Alabama Game & Fisheries Commissioner, the first rodeo drew 260 anglers paying a $5 entry fee. Carrier pigeons transmitted daily catch news, while Fort Gaines Pier served as headquarters. Today, the Mobile Jaycees oversee an event that attracts over 4,000 fishermen and 75,000 spectators annually, earning its title as America’s oldest and largest fishing tournament.

What you could expect to see

  • Fishing blasts off at 5 a.m. Friday, with species categories from speckled trout to king mackerel.
  • Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament on the Saturday before the main event invites kids (15 & under) to reel in prizes.
  • Live music, seafood vendors and a bustling marketplace keep non-anglers entertained.

Conservation & Community Impact

The rodeo partners with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and University of South Alabama to collect scientific data, earning scholarships and research grants. A new “Return-’Em-Right” prize encourages safe catch-and-release practices. Proceeds support marine science, local scholarships and community initiatives, reinforcing the rodeo’s commitment to sustainability.
